Same high-school community
Both towns feed the Lake Central school community, with Lake Central High School located in St. John.
This is one of NWI's most interesting close calls. Both are in the Lake Central school community, and their July 2026 median sale prices were almost identical. The real choice is lifestyle: Dyer leans quieter, more owner-heavy and newly rail-connected; Schererville leans larger, more commercial and exceptionally convenient for everyday errands.
Redfin's three-month market snapshots through July 2026 put Dyer at $349,825 and Schererville at $350,075. That does not mean comparable houses cost the same; it means the townwide market medians are unusually close right now.
Dyer: $349,825 β’ Schererville: $350,075. With price nearly tied, neighborhood, tax, commute and lifestyle differences matter more.

Lake Central High School explicitly describes itself as serving the Tri-Town community of St. John, Schererville and Dyer. That means the town name alone is less useful here than the exact elementary and middle-school assignment.

Dyer and Schererville contain different elementary/middle attendance paths. Confirm the actual property address with the district before relying on a listing.
For these two, neighborhood, commute, tax history and daily-life fit may be more useful tie-breakers than saying one town has βbetter schools.β

Passenger service on the South Shore Line's Monon Corridor began March 31, 2026. The southern terminus is Munster/Dyer, fundamentally improving Dyer's transit story compared with prior years.

Indiana DLGF's 2026 certified-rate data puts the Dyer tax district at 2.5288 per $100 of assessed value and Schererville at 1.9870. That is a meaningful town-level difference β but it still is not your final property-tax bill.

Both have legitimate parks and family recreation. The more useful difference is what surrounds your neighborhood every ordinary Tuesday.
Dyer's 77-acre Central Park includes ball fields, a dog park, pavilion/restrooms, playground, walking paths and large open recreation space.
Redar Park, Rohrman Park, Stephen Park and greenway planning give Schererville multiple recreation/event nodes rather than one dominant park.
Schererville's larger commercial footprint makes shopping, dining, medical offices and daily errands one of its clearest strengths.
