✨ 2026 family comparison

Which Northwest Indiana town fits your family best?

Start with five popular Lake County family choices - Munster, St. John, Crown Point, Dyer and Schererville - then narrow the list by the priorities that actually shape your daily life.

Start with fit, not a winner.

The five towns below are the current NWI Nest launch set. They are not ranked 1 through 5 because a Chicago commuter, a family prioritizing a larger newer home, and someone who wants a walkable community center can reasonably choose different places.

Munster

How to choose

Four questions that usually separate the towns.

1. How often will somebody really commute toward Chicago?

Do not treat this as a vague preference. Test the exact work schedule, rail station, parking situation and drive at the time you would actually travel.

2. What kind of housing are you buying?

A townwide median is useful context, but the house you want may sit in a very different price band. Compare like-for-like homes: age, square footage, lot, taxes, condition and HOA.

3. Are you buying a school district or a specific address?

Always verify the exact school assignment for the exact property. A town name, ZIP code or real-estate listing label is not enough.

4. What does a normal Tuesday look like?

Think beyond Saturday attractions. Groceries, daycare, practices, pediatric care, commute, grandparents and errands often shape family satisfaction more than a single amenity.

Our current shorthand

Munster: access. St. John: growth + space. Crown Point: downtown + family identity. Dyer: balance + rail. Schererville: convenience.
