Both are popular family choices in south Lake County, but they feel different. St. John generally means a higher housing budget, faster recent growth and a more subdivision-oriented feel. Crown Point generally gives you a lower current median sale price plus a stronger historic downtown and event hub.
These are useful context—not a scorecard. Housing-market data is current through July 2026; Census community figures are mostly 2020–2024 estimates with 2025 population estimates.

St. John is associated with Lake Central School Corporation; Crown Point is associated with Crown Point Community School Corporation. Exact attendance boundaries matter, so a home address should always be checked before relying on a district or school name.

Both communities invest heavily in family recreation. The difference is more about layout and atmosphere than whether one has “good parks.”
St. John's official park-location page lists 27 parks/recreation sites, including Heron Lake Park, Lake Hills Park, Heartland Park, Veterans Civic Park and neighborhood playgrounds.
A 40-acre Heartland Park expansion was under construction in 2026, with plans for an amphitheater, covered event seating, indoor community rooms and a destination-style splash pad.
Crown Point's official park map lists numerous parks and facilities, while Bulldog Park hosts family programming such as the farmers market, splash pad and live music.

The Census mean commute number can be misleading for a family specifically commuting to Chicago because it averages every worker's destination.
The town describes itself as 24 miles southeast of Chicago. Geographically, it is the stronger of these two choices for a household that regularly heads northwest toward Chicago.
State planning material places Crown Point roughly 35–40 miles southeast of Chicago, with I-65 access on the city's eastern side.
Before buying, run the commute from the exact house at your actual departure time. A 10-minute difference on paper can become much larger during peak traffic.

Our future NWI Nest version should make this easier by pre-filtering local providers and letting parents compare them side by side while still linking back to state records.
